Information About Our Summer Running Program-2019: Begins Friday night, June 14th!

Summer Running is optional and open to everybody.

We will kick off our summer running program with a team social night on Friday night, June 14th! We will meet at the park in Freeburg.  We will do a light run, eat, and then enjoy a pool party!

Our regular optional summer running sessions begin Tuesday, June 18th.  We will meet on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays throughout the summer.  We will run at 7am and we will be finished at 8:30am on most days. We will meet at the FCHS track on most days. Our last session is Thursday, August 1st, which will be our annual event of running the bike trails at SIUE and then spending the rest of the day at Raging Rivers.  Also during the summer program, there are opportunities to participate in our 5k fundraiser event, the team camp at Bradley University, and the opportunity to assist wtih our junior high camp.  Obviously, we will be introducing all of the athletes to the demands of running. In addition to running, we will also introduce general strength, core work, and flexibility.

The first day of mandatory practice is Monday, August 12th at 6am at the track.  On normal school days, we practice each day after school until 5:00. There are times when we practice in the mornings, rather than the afternoons, especially on Fridays.  When it is too hot, we will also move practices to the mornings, with those practices starting at 6am. With regards to competitions, most of our meets are on Saturdays! The first meet is in late August and the season continues until the middle of October for JV runners and early November for varsity runners.

We are glad that you are interested in joining the FCHS Cross Country Program.  The following questions are a list of frequently asked questions about our program:

    What is Cross Country?

Cross Country is an endurance running sport.  A typical meet is 3 miles.

Do I have to be an experienced running to come out for Cross Country?

No!!!! If you can run one lap around the track, we can work with you!  We have runners of ALL different levels. Don’t be afraid…you WON’T be last!!!:)

    What is summer running?

It is a time where runners of all levels can come out to run with the team to get into shape for the season.  IT IS OPTIONAL.  However, it is highly RECOMMENDED that all runners workout with the team to prevent injuries and ease into the training.  Runners who come out with no conditioning in August tend to have a hard time getting into shape and often times may suffer injury.  If you can come only sporadically throughout the summer, it’s better than not coming at all.

How long does the season last?

The regular season ends in mid-late October.  The post-season ends with the IHSA state meet the first Saturday in November.

How do you make the team?

Everybody makes the team, as long as you come to practice, have a positive attitude, and work hard.  There are no cuts…there is no bench in cross country.

    Do you guys have fun?

You bet!! We had 75 members on our team last year.  We are a very close group…so you will automatically make lots of new friends.  We also take some trips and excursions throughout the summer and fall to get to run somewhere new!!!

    What are the rules?

    1. Be at practice.
    2. Work hard each day with a positive attitude.
    3. Respect the school, coaches, and teammates.

What success has your program had?

Our girls have made it to state 11 consecutive years!  Our boys have made it to state 10 consecutive years!!! This has been a golden period of success for FCHS XC!

How can I stay up to date with information on the team?

We have a team web page on the school website at www.fchs77.org.  You can also follow us on twitter @FreeburgCCTF and on Facebook at @fchscrosscountry.

    Where do you practice?

The track, park, and area roads! We also take a few trips during the season to run new places!

In conclusion, I hope this information sheds some light on our program!! I hope you choose to be a part of our program and great tradition!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me or call me!  Go Midgets!!
