Important Tests

  • Standardized tests are an important element in the college selection and application process. Students should check with the schools in which they're interested in applying to see what test are required.

    • ACT - This is a national college admissions exam that covers English, mathematics, reading, science, and an optional writing assessment. Students wishing to take the exam may do so at their own expense. The exam is administered six times a year (September, October, December, February, April, and June) and registration deadlines come well in advance of the test date.     • SAT - The SAT Reasoning test is a national college admissions exam that covers English, writing, and mathematics. SAT Subject Tests are also available in specific academic subjects and are required by some highly selective colleges. Students wishing to take these exams can find additional information in the guidance office and at the College Board website. http://www.collegeboard.org/. The SAT is offered seven times during the year in the following months: October, November, December, January, March, May, and June.

    • PSAT/NMSQT - The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a nationally administered, standardized test that provides practice for the SAT. Additionally, scores from this exam are used to determine qualification for National Merit Scholarships. The exam covers critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. This is an optional exam open to juniors.

    • ASVAB - The Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multi-faceted assessment that is an essential element to entrance into the U.S. military. Scores in Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge count towards entrance requirements. Scores in other areas of the test determine how qualified a student is for entrance into certain military specialties and enlistment bonuses. The ASVAB is administered at military recruitment sites across the country.
